Entrepreneurship Center for Growth and Excellence: Creating shared infrastructure for Birmingham’s small business ecosystem

Our programs

The Entrepreneurship Center for Growth and Excellence is a recently-established nonprofit with a mission to strengthen how small businesses in Birmingham, Alabama access capital, technical assistance, and coordinated support.

How the Entrepreneurship Center works to strengthen the small business ecosystem

The Entrepreneurship Center for Growth and Excellence is a Birmingham-based nonprofit recently established through a federal Recompete Grant to strengthen how small businesses access capital, technical assistance, and coordinated support across the city. The Center was created to address long-standing gaps in ecosystem coordination by serving as a backbone organization for Birmingham’s small business support system.

Rather than operating as a direct service provider, the Center focuses on building shared infrastructure that allows lenders, business support organizations, and ecosystem partners to align priorities, share information, and operate more effectively in support of local entrepreneurs.

Program overview

What this work enables in Birmingham

  • A formalized ecosystem connectivity apparatus with 30 stakeholders, including eight CDFIs.
  • At least 17 ecosystem convenings and three technical assistance trainings for community finance organizations over an 18-month period.
  • 250+ small businesses reached through convenings, workshops, and coordinated ecosystem activities.

Anticipated outcomes

  • Stronger local infrastructure for small business support and capital access.
  • More aligned referral pathways, capitalization strategies, and technology adoption among ecosystem partners.

Built from what Birmingham small business owners told us they need, this work strengthens the infrastructure that supports entrepreneurs across the city.
